Just like I hid my pregnancy from friends and family, I totally hid my pregnancy from my students. I don't like to tell them for a few reasons. 1. I love to see them talk amongst themselves about it but be too scared to approach me about it. (It is one of the few times a year my students are actually scared of me) 2. The longer I can keep it secret, the quicker it goes for me. 3. Junior high students are just really nosey and ask a lot of questions and it kind of gets annoying.
Today, it all came out. (I have been expecting this day for a few weeks as I think I have the baby bump.) It was third period and two girls from opposite corners of the room are trying to whisper too each other and then laughing anytime I looked at them. I knew then the question was coming. It took another 15 minutes but one of them finally got up the nerve to ask. I said yes and continued to correct the assignment I was grading. It was followed with a lot of, "I thought so", "I was too scared to ask you", and "I knew it." I joked for a minute or two about it and then asked them to start their assignment. That is when the questions started. "What is it?" "If it is a boy what are you going to name it?" "Can we rub your belly?" (ummmm, no) "Do you want a boy or a girl?" "Why didn't you tell me?" (As if we are best friends). And then I reminded them that it was my baby and not theirs so none of that is really any of their business. And I promised to not name it after any of them. And then I kindly reminded them that it was math class and they had work to do.
So yes, I am still my sarcastic, rude self. And yes, everyone in PG will soon know about my pregnancy. And the best part is that in less that 96 hours, I will know the gender of this baby!
